All rite, guys, let me start with my personal review of Butterfly Lovers

Being familiar with the story, I think that I will not enjoy watching the re-make of Liang Zhu. Since it was being aired on Wa TV ch 89 Astro TV, I often just took a glance of it but nothing happened except I found the ending song 'Shuang Fei' was so nice. Everything changed when one day I had the time to take a close look at Peter Ho as Liang Shanbo. By the end of the series, I become Peter Ho’s fans.

The 41-episode Butterfly Lovers starts with a girl coming from a reputable rich family, Zhu Yingtai who believes that a woman should have freedom to marry to someone she loves. Therefore, she takes the risk to help her brother’s ‘bride’ to run away on the wedding day. Avoid being betrothed, she then disguises herself as a young guy and confirms her parents to let her go to study. On the way to the school, she meets a young ‘book-worm’ guy, Liang Shanbo and has a good impression on him. Soon, they become good friends and even agree to each other to be sworn brothers. During their school days, both go through bad and good times together. Conflicts with their envious friends and unwise teacher just make their friendship and love grow deeper. Shanbo who never realises that Yingtai is a girl, later on knows the truth and happily accepts the fact that his love for his ‘brother’ is now turning to the one for a sweetheart. He hurriedly goes to Yingtai’s home to ask for a marriage proposal. However, he has to face difficulites with his love rival, Ma Wencai and Yingtai’s parents. Nothing can stop their being together as it is the fate to be a pair of soulmates…. when one dies the other does not want to live anymore!

Characters
Liang Shanbo
He is a kind-hearted, sincere and caring soul. He is very protective to Yingtai and sincerely helps her in each problem she gets. He dares to take the challenge to help Yingtai. He is also helpful to his schoolmates including to the one who always wants to harm him – Ma Wencai. Shanbo holds the principle that being poor does not mean not having education. Thus, he is so diligent in his study and finds his talent in irrigation. His effort gives him a good result for finally he can become a government officer and raises his rank in the society.

I love seeing Peter Ho as Liang Shanbo. Before watching Butterfly Lovers, Peter Ho’s image for me was a violent fighter as his role in Feng Yun. I am surprised to see his “student” and tender look as Shanbo. I get hooked with his smiles, melting eyes, and sad facial expression. All blent into one package that can make me fall in love with Peter. His acting is just excellent ! I can also feel the chemistry between Peter and Dong Jie.

Zhu Yingtai
She is a smart and brave girl. Disguising herself as a young man, she dares to take any risks to study among male students. She is very firm in her decision to love Shanbo whom her family will not like him because of his social rank. She also does not move on though Ma Wencai keeps on winning her heart in various ways.

Dong Jie is okay as Zhu Yingtai. I think she is prettier in Butterfly Lovers than in her other series. I find her very pretty both in female and male clothes. Her acting is also good especially in crying scenes. I love seeing her with Peter as I find they have such a good chemistry.

Ma Wencai
He is arrogant and selective in getting along with others because of his social status. Looking back at his sad childhood, he is actually pitiful. He has some traumatic moments of losing his mother and getting big pressure from his father. Feeling that Yingtai is suitable for him, he tries all his best to be with Yingtai. He uses any dirty tricks to reach his goal. He does not want to be defeated by Shanbo on whom he always looks down. Moreover, Yingtai’s continuous comparisons between he and Shanbo hurt his feelings deeper.

Chen Guanlin roles as a bad guy again. Perhaps, his sharp eyes and nose support this kind of role. Anyway, he acts very well as Ma Wencai. He looks so handsome when he is on the horse and wore the war costume. I think this 3rd pary role is not kind bad because viewers can justify and feel pitiful to him.

Best Scenes

Shanbo & Yingtai
1. Shanbo piggybacks Yingtai when she falls into the river
2. Shanbo takes the challenge to catch Wencai’s ball so that Wencai and friends will stop disturbing Yingtai.
3. Shanbo and Yingtai solve their misunderstanding that causes Yingtai falls into the cliff.
4. Shanbo silently eats Yingtai’s sweets at night and then Yingtai shocked him.
5. Shanbo gives Yingtai such a meaningful look as she leaves to find the teacher with Wencai (Peter’s eyes really melt my heart)
6. Shanbo is confused with himself to see Yingtai in a female clothes dancing.
7. Yingtai draws a picture of Shanbo and then changes it into a pig
8. Shanbo gets beaten as he is accused of stealing and Yingtai stops it.
9. The day Yingtai has to return home and the night they spent together sleeping in one bed without any books as 'border line' and wearing the red wedding gowns.
10. Shanbo’s first time to see Yingtai as a girl in Yingtai's house.
11. Shanbo finds Yingtai unconscious when she is thrown into the sea by the wicked girl. (Peter's acting is so touching)
12. Yingtai reads Shanbo’s full of holes, half-burnt letters

Others:
1. The traditional celebration which causes Yingtai’s true identity is found by Wencai
2. The hunting lesson

Conclusion
I enjoy this series so much. I laugh a lot to see some comical scenes during the school days. The ending makes me sob and sob. I can say that Butterfly Lovers is a worth watching series. Besides the heart-warming Romeo-Juliet love story, you can still see some scenic views and assorted costumes. The costumes of the leads are quite various for a TV series. They design lovely costumes for Shanbo and Yingtai for the school uniforms, daily clothes, hunting session, and the wedding gown. Last but not the least, the songs are just so nice to listen.

My personal favorite scene is when female Ying Tai dancing in front of Shan Bo. He finds out Ying Tai so pretty in that female clothes and his heart is beating faster than usual without knowing that "He" is really a lady behind the guy clothes which Shan Bo always sees all the times.

Besides the atmosphere, the dance itself is very very nice...Dong Jie looks prettier in that scene No wonder Shan Bo's Peter gets shocked (in good meaning, of course)

Yeah..U must wacth it!!! Sooner, u'll find out the different Peter..Without the arrogant Si Lang or cold blood heart Yun, Peter turn into the innocent and warm Shan Bo...U'll luv it!

The magic thingy in the last episode is like... in Chinese i describe it as "disgusting"... >.<

although i cried like mad when i watched the last few episodes, i still lost all my confidence and interest due to them... for this series, i think the attractive "part" should be Ma Wencai and Zhu Yingqi. Many ppl in China also think Ma Wencai in this version is a successful character... Chen Guanlin became famous due to this series... haha... anw...

Looking at those daily pic, Cai Xinyao is quite pretty. She needs to be more natural in her acting as Xinlian. Just 2 cents of my thought. ^ ^

I don't like Gu Xin Lan's role...It surprises me to see her pictures above...

She actually has a pair of pretty eyes...She kindda cute...
